Back in March, when Dan Warner & The Night Parrots launched their acclaimed new album ‘Maybe, then...’, the last song of the gig was a never-before-heard original tune called, ‘Long Gone Songs’. The song went off. After the gig, the rumbling in the room from the audience was ‘why the hell did The Night Parrots leave ‘Long Gone Songs’ off the record? ’Well, the band has taken the hint.
At George Lane on Sunday afternoon 27th of August, Dan Warner & The Night Parrots return to St Kilda to put things right by launching ‘Long Gone Songs’ as a brand new single. The full Night Parrots line-up will be playing the show-featuring Marcel Borrack, Clio Renner, Ash Davies, Nathan Farrelly and Adam Simmons.

The Beast with Two Heads
Past, present, future.
Mark and Rob Snarski have been dabbling with music for 40 years. Firstly together with Chad’s Tree ~ a band David McComb (lead singer of The Triffids) described as sounding like Television backing The Walker Brothers. Then Mark moved on to form The Jackson Code and Rob started singing with The Blackeyed Susans ~ both bands releasing numerous albums and touring extensively.
It's been over a decade since the two brothers have shared a stage. Mark continues to wander the hills of Asturias in Spain in search of elusive songs. Rob has recently finished up a national tour with soopergroup SnarskiCircusLindyBand.
Sure, they’ll be exchanging a song or two and diving deep into their rich back catalogue but expect some focus on the new, the present, the future.

Frank Yamma
*** PREMIUM SEATING SOLD OUT ***
*** GENERAL ADMISSION (MOSTLY SEATED) TICKETS REMAIN ***
"Pitjantjatjara singer-songwriter Frank Yamma has long been one of Australia's strongest indigenous voices. From his 1990s central desert recordings – both solo and with his band Piranpa – through to his more recent albums Countryman (2010) and Uncle (2014), Yamma's heartfelt lyrics and moving delivery have always set him apart as an exceptional artist." Seth Jordan - Songlines UK
Frank Yamma is one of Australia’s most significant Indigenous songwriters with an ability to cross cultural and musical boundaries. An initiated Pitjantjatjara man, Frank sings in his native language and English. His mighty songs, magical guitar playing and deeply evocative voice tell stories of country, protection, heartache, travel and love. Although he’s lived in Adelaide for many years, Frank’s spirit belongs to the heart of Australia. Uluru. Docker River. Ernabella. Central Australia. As Frank says, “wherever the Pitjantjatjara mob come from”.
His albums, Countryman (2010) and Uncle (2014) released after a ten-year hiatus gained Yamma widespread critical acclaim and recognition leading to an opportunity to perform nationally and internationally. Frank’s touring highlights include WOMADelaide, Byron Bay Bluesfest and Sydney Festival. He has undertaken three tours to Europe performing at the 2012 Cultural Olympiad (UK), Womad (UK); The New Hebridean Festival (Scotland), Festival Bled (Slovenia) and Colours of Ostrava (Czech Republic). In 2014, Yamma was included in the official showcase for WOMEX, a spot which is rare and coveted amongst artists from Australia as well as internationally.
Frank Yamma released his debut vinyl record, Tjukurpa: The Story in Feb 2020. The record received widespread critical acclaim in Australia and internationally including an ARIA nomination for Best Blues & Roots Album and a five-star review in Songlines UK. The record is accompanied with a digital release of The Kulila Project a compilation which features contributions from long time collaborators David Bridie and Phil Wales as well as remixes from CORIN, James Henry and EA Wave's Jinku, Hiribae & Ukweli.

Steve Balbi
*** PREMIUM SEATING SOLD OUT ***
*** GENERAL ADMISSION (MOSTLY SEATED) TICKETS AVAILABLE ***
The music of singer, composer, performer and producer Steve Balbi mines a kaleidoscope of life at the margins. Transcending rock and pop while coalescing sentimentality and soul, Balbi bespeaks Bowie and Dylan in melody and verse, exploring the heterogeneity, refinement and dirty rotten groove of Radiohead.
First cutting his chops on bass with Kevin Borich Express at just 17 years of age, Balbi was very much the child prodigy. Although the creative chameleon’s species being was soon liberated as he cultivated an indelible production and song-writing partnership with Justin Stanley; first founding and producing Aussie chart-toppers Noiseworks (1986), before forming the Electric Hippies (1993).
Numerous European tours, four multi-platinum award-winning albums, and various ARIA Award Nominations later, Balbi lifted his guitar from the rack to form Universe with Cathy Green (X) in 1996, working with Prince and Paisley Park’s Susan Rogers, before Move Trees and Moon emerged in subsequent years. Then in 2011, Balbi accepted an invitation to front 1970s and ‘80s new-wavers Mi-Sex, who in 2021 marked the 40th Anniversary of Graffiti Crimes and Computer Games.
Reflecting upon his journey as composer and producer, Balbi’s eclectic catalogue of production credits transcend genres, akin to his odyssey as a musician and performer. For the dynamic assemblage of artists that he’s produced includes Noiseworks, Electric Hippies, Glenn Shorrock, Juice, Jenny Morris, Pearls & Swine, Toe to Toe, Vincent Stone, Fyre Byrd, Moon, and Christine Anu, among numerous others. And in 1999, Balbi sat in on vocals and guitar for David Bowie’s Hours sessions with Marius de Vries too.

Pete Campbell
Campbell's blend of folk, blues and country aligns him with modern Americana but it's clear his influences are wide ranging, from iconic artists such as Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, The Beatles and The Allman Brothers to contemporary songwriters such as Paul Kelly, Neil Finn and Bernard Fanning.
Campbell's songs are a sidewalk cafe, a mood, a glimpse in the mirror. His voice is authentic and intimate, floating with a warmth and a country quality filtered through urban dust. Campbell will release his debut EP in 2022.
“Some songs are evocative of a time and place through the singer’s voice; some through the music. Some have the entire package, so that you slip into the song and feel completely transported to that time and place – and this is the case with the new Americana single ‘Bring to the Dawn’ by Pete Campbell”

Dave Wright & The Midnight Ramblers - Album Launch Show
*** PREMIUM SEATING SOLD OUT ***
*** GENERAL ADMISSION (MOSTLY SEATED) TICKETS REMAIN ***
City born but country raised, when Dave Wright puts pen to paper and pick to guitar strings he knocks out epics and ravers and boozers about girls, cars, Australia, mariticide, Diggers, truckers, sadness, sickness, drunks, heartbroken mothers, angry fathers, desperate sons … and death. Lots of death. It’s a dark road rutted by Holden rust buckets and RSL relics but between 2012-2021 Dave and his band the Midnight Electric released 4 albums and 2 EPS of searing roots rock music. In 2017 however, Dave turned his attention to his other love: old time music, and formed the Midnight Ramblers as a side project to satisfy his love of bluegrass, folk, country, and storytelling songs. Featuring long time stalwarts Rob Barber and Tim Cavanagh, plus fiddle player Connor Ross- Hicks, the Ramblers initially delved deep into Dave's vast catalogue to re-imagine some of his most popular tunes into down home country and bluegrass stompers. As the folk bug bit deep, Dave devoted more and more time to writing for the Ramblers and in 2019 they released their first long player, the ominously titled Turn Out The Lights. Mick Thomas had this to say about Turn Out The Lights:
“If the shirt fits then maybe you should wear that shirt. After years of playing his beloved Melbourne town to a committed bunch of followers in full barnstorming brass laden electric mode Turn Out the Lights sees Dave Wright and his core band in acoustic navy bluegrass style and you know what? It works. It’s a different shirt for sure, but it looks good on him.”
Playing old- time style, gathered around one microphone with big harmonies and lashings of rolling mandolin and soaring fiddle, Dave Wright & The Midnight Ramblers began playing shows in earnest in 2019 and appeared at The Western Weekender in 2020, Out On The Weekend in 2021, Yackandandah Folk Festival in 2023, and on supports to Mick Thomas’ Roving Commision. They will be playing Newport Folk Festival before departing on their Small Towns Tour in July however for one night only the band will launch their brand new album Darkness Calling by playing it in full, in sequence at the beautiful George Lane in St Kilda in a rollicking, thoughtful, and intimate show that is not to be missed.

The Cartridge Family
The Cartridge Family sing sunshine-filled hillbilly songs of death and despair. Beautiful harmonies and humorous lyrics pepper their extensive original repertoire. Songs such as ‘Beerijuana’, ‘Hipster Bogan’, ’Dickheads With Guns’ and ‘Megan the Vegan’ help The Cartridge Family take old-time country music on one hell of a foot-stomping good time!
Charlotte Le Lievre
Described by Dave Ruby Howe from Triple J as 'authentic and tear-soaked alt-country', songwriter Charlotte Le Lievre is renowned for moving audiences with her deeply emotive lyrics and live performances. Drawing on the diverse currents of country music, Le Lievre weaves songs that traverse experiences of grief and outback landscapes. Her voice and songs are equal parts heart wrenching and uplifting, hailing from a vintage era of smokefilled honky tonk bars or late night fireside jam sessions. Le Lievre released her debut album Songs from the Barrier Line on Friday 10 March 2023 to widespread acclaim. The body of 10 original songs take listeners on a journey, as Le Lievre grapples with the existential nature of death and dying, the processing of grief and the healing nature of connection to the unique outback town of Broken Hill. The record gives a nod to both classic country and folk traditions, showcasing Le Lievre’s genre-defiant style and solidifying her as a powerful emergent country songwriter.

Les Thomas - Single Launch + Teresa Duffy-Richards
*** PREMIUM FRONT ROW SEATING SOLD OUT ***
*** PREMIUM SECOND ROW SEATING & GENERAL ADMISSION TICKETS REMAIN ***
“There are no riches but the riches of love. And there’s nothing you can’t rise above”. Whether it’s the sustaining invocation to his young son, or the pain and desperation of our forgotten peoples, songwriter and activist Les Thomas sings true to the heart of every listener. His intense lyrical style, and impassioned musical presentation enthral with deftly woven stories that we can’t walk away from. A must see artist”.
In the winter of 2016, Les Thomas experienced the most harrowing crisis of his life. Like some modern day Don Quixote, he was pushed to his emotional and psychological limits during a campaign to close the Don Dale youth detention centre. In the immediate aftermath and near-hospitalisation, he wrote a song called Man on Fire that poetically captured how it affected him, his family and his fellow activists. The song is about drawing on those painful lessons in a way that can give hope and eventually “to the prize, we rise again.”
Anyone who’s been through an ordeal with extreme highs and lows can relate to, with a chorus that takes off like a spaceship.
It’s frequently the most requested song in Les’s sets and he always knew this would be the lead single for his next album.
Now it’s time to make this song launch official with a very special debut full band show featuring his producer Stephen Grady on bass, Justin Olson on drums and Joshua Jones on lead guitar.
The evening will also include a premiere screening of the Man on Fire video clip, filmed on location in the forests of Warburton by Ryan Tews and featuring a suitably powerful vintage road machine that has to be seen to be believed.
Check out some of Les Thomas below:
The Circus (Acoustic) - Les Thomas
Supporting on the night is Teresa Duffy-Richards. "Teresa's depth and artistry is astonishingly beyond her years and is one of the most exciting voices in alt-country this country has heard in a long time - absolutely gorgeous!" - Kath Devaney, ABC Country
Teresa Duffy-Richards' songs are steeped in the vast traditions of folk and country music. She and partner Joshua Jones create a rousing live duo show with acoustic guitars, banjo and dobro, often compared to the likes of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. But ultimately it is the timeless songwriting of old world and 20th century troubadours and Tennessee-reared yodellers, that inspires much of her work.

Perry Keyes
*** PLEASE NOTE, THIS SHOW IS NOW SOLD OUT ***
Perry grew up in the inner city working class area of Sydney known as Redfern. He grew up in a home populated by various uncles, aunts, cousins and grandparents. Every Saturday morning his grandmother would do the house work whilst playing the likes of Ray Charles and Roy Orbison at a volume loud enough to spill out onto the neighbouring streets, lined with tightly-packed terraced houses, warehouses and textile factories.
When he was 12, he got his first guitar and within six months he’d written his first song. It was during his first year at high school that his family moved to the neighbouring area of Waterloo, with its high-rise Department of Housing blocks. It was within this environment that Perry formed the band The Stolen Holdens in 1988. Musically inspired by the likes of The Clash and Elvis Costello and lyrically taking his cue from artists like Lou Reed and Bruce Springsteen, Keyes and The Stolen Holdens developed a small but loyal following in the local Sydney music scene.
The band faded by the early 90’s and Perry re-emerged in 2003, playing solo sets featuring songs that would make up the bulk of his debut double album Meter– released in 2005 to critical acclaim and numerous years end best-of lists.
His next album The Last Ghost Train Home was released in 2007. It went on to be short-listed for the Australian Music Prize and was named the ABC Radio National Album of the Year.
His ARIA nominated 3rd album, Johnny Ray’s Downtown contains 16 tracks that once again draw on Perry’s local environment – the marginalised, often neglected and rapidly decaying inner city areas of Sydney – for their inspiration.
With Sunnyholt the focus shifts west to the outer Sydney suburbs where Perry's family travelled in the late 1960s and 1970s only to find an environment devoid of infrastructure and struggling to birth a community.
His latest studio album, Jim Salmon's Lament was released in 2018 and was followed by his first live album. Live in B-Town was released at the end of 2021.
A new studio album is scheduled for release in 2023.

DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND, WE HAVE RELEASED A SECOND PERRY KEYES SHOW!

*** GENERAL ADMISSION TICKETS REMAIN ***
The Modfathers play from 1964 to 1984. Music that started it all. The Mod & Mod revival. The Jam, Joe Jackson, The Who, The Clash, Elvis Costello, The Specials and more.
It’s 1979. Where were you?. These boys were on a mission. Tommy McEwan was working for an oil company and spending his weekends in a Flanellette shirt living the 1970’s dream in his 1963 Kombi Van. Rob Kirk was scaling the heights of his chosen profession, having recently won the prestigious ‘Mr Junior Cut and Blowwave’ title at the Wellington hair awards.
Then it happened …….
For Tommy it was a Hamburger with the lot at 2am at the Canterbury Rd fish and chip shop. The Clash came on the grease encrusted transistor radio. He made a decision. Monday Morning he quit his job, sold his stuff and went to Maggie Thatcher’s London. He returned to Melbourne 2 years later, sporting a Flat top Haircut and Looking for a Ska Band to play in. That band ended up being No Nonsense, after that The Swingin’ Sidewalks, Louis King, the list goes on. The Music changed. The Flat top never……..
For Rob it was Wellington New Zealand, the latest eagles Album, Split Enz, The Ennui of the small town boy. He saw those thick black Glasses on Declan McManus’s face and he was sold….Moved to Melbourne and started playing in clubs.
They are bringin’ it to George Lane June 10th. Dust off the Harrington, Polish up the Docs. Find that Fred Perry, and get down. Special Guest for the show, the fantastic Steve Lucas …we all know where he’s been. He’s been Awesome!

Blackbirds F.C
*** LESS THAN 5 TICKETS REMAIN FOR THIS SHOW ***
"Melbourne's Blackbirds FC create beautifully layered lush sonic journeys that make you nostalgic for some of the great Australian bands of yesteryear. The Church springs to mind, but it's also for fans of The Chills, REM, and Prefab Sprout, for starters”. The AU Review
Featuring members of The Hollowmen, Helvelln, the Vanda's, and Flicker, Blackbirds FC play their own brand of new wave, country rock inspired by The Go-Betweens, REM, Wilco, and, oh yeah, The Church.
With a couple of singles, Transport Planes and Island of the Dogs, under their belts in 2021, the band are raring to release new material and play their second show at St Kilda's regal George Lane band room.
Recorded over 18 months in 2021-22, the Magiclands album sees the Blackbirds find their way back to the artists that first inspired them, connecting the band at a deeper level and bringing a new authenticity to their sound.
"There is an unmistakable antipodean blood flowing through the veins of Island of the Dogs – drawing in the wide-sweeping landscapes created by The Triffids and The Go-Betweens, the sparkle and energy of The Church and the themes and storytelling of Paul Kelly.” Backseat Mafia
"Transport Planes is a song of liminal states, which drifts like a daydream transporting you back to the days of 1980s FM radio, a chorus that will stick in your brain for days, perfectly placed backing vocals, references to truckers and Tasmania, and transport planes, all driven stick-shift by guitar tones so bright and sunny you need 15+ fluoro zinc to protect you.” The Guardian: Australia's best new music for January

Jo Meares' Silver Bullets + Gareth Skinner
Sydney songwriter Jo Meares returns to Melbourne for a special George Lane show with his brilliant Melbourne band Silver Bullets. The phenomenal Gareth Skinner and his cello will be performing on the night also.
Silver Bullets are:-
Mark McCartney(guitars)
Mark Carson(upright bass)
Scott Bennett(drums)
Charlie Barker(saw/backing vocals)
Jo will be playing songs from his 2022 release ‘Dream Hotel’ and his 3 previous solo albums.
“Meares, collaborating with Melbourne musician Anth Dymke of Pony Face, manages to draw in those elements of music that make it so cathartic and moving – think of artists like Tindersticks, Sigur Ros and the like who manage convey such feeling and emotion into their work, resulting in extremes: a sort of euphoria mixed with melancholy." Arun Kendall Backseat Mafia
‘Dream Hotel’ is a magnificent tour de force: an assemblage of pure emotion that breathes softly down your neck and take possession of your very soul. Enchanting, transfixing, mesmerising: weaving an indelible spell. This is pure magic' Arun Kendall, Backseat Mafia 9.5/10
"Man, this is gorgeous!" Mark Rogers Nashville Babylon (Radio New Zealand) on 'The Dream Hotel’
“Jo Meares’ music is unique with a truly original sound. He is a wonderful singer-songwriter and incredible live performer. His three albums released to date (‘A Handful Of Smoke’, ‘One More Time’ and ‘King Of The Crystal Mountain’) are all classic Australian recordings. Part Neil Young, part Lou Reed, part Nick Cave – but with a uniquely Australian twang!” Vinny Ramone The Outpost 2SER
"'Back To The World' is another of Meares’ mini-masterpieces. The 10-minute closer, 'An Old Dog And A Shotgun', would be worth your time alone, would be the album standout, the reason to come here to hear this – but there’s not a single dud track." Simon Sweetman Off The Tracks, NZ
“…the whole album hit me in a way that some albums do; something by Richmond Fontaine, say. Or Springsteen’s ‘Ghost of Tom Joad’. A complete thing, a completed album that plays out like a movie or a book or a stage play. It’s there. It unfolds before you. You’re listening to it but you can see it in front of you – you can imagine, the mind wanders due to the beauty and intensity and integrity of the music and the lyrics. Big bold stories. Real”. Simon Sweetman Off The Tracks (review ‘King of the Crystal Mountain’ album

Madeleine Clare is a Melbourne-born singer songwriter with a point to prove: that she can still make great music and love performing even after quitting the muso life more than a decade ago. And prove it she did, with her debut solo album The Eleventh Hour out 5 May on all platforms and launching officially at the Ballroom. Madeleine co-produced the album with Australian Music Prize nominee and multi-instrumentalist Jethro Pickett, a labour love distracting her during lockdowns.
The voice of an angel but with plenty of the devil in her, The Eleventh Hour is made for late night introspection, drawing from a wide range of influences including alt country, folk, indie noir, psychedelia, and cabaret to create rich, evocative and intimate music. Madeleine will be joined by a killer band including Ben Wiesner (drums) Rick Plant (bass) Matt Dixon (guitar) and special guest Dan Brodie (keys/guitar). Already gearing up for album number 2, the joy and passion Madeleine brings to her performances is one emanating from a woman finally ready to share her voice with the world.
