OUR HISTORY

Located within the iconic George Hotel Building on Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, George Lane sits beneath the legendary former Crystal Ballroom — one of the most influential live music spaces in Australian history.

Since 1857, the heritage-listed George Hotel has played an important role in the cultural fabric of St Kilda. Its grand architecture and rich history continue to shape the character and atmosphere of the venue today.

The Crystal Ballroom became the heartbeat of Melbourne’s post-punk and live music movement, hosting legendary artists including The Birthday Party, Hunters & Collectors, INXS, Midnight Oil, Dead Can Dance and The Saints.

Today, George Lane proudly continues that story — reimagined as an intimate live music and events venue celebrating original music, creative culture and memorable experiences.

From Americana, blues, folk and rock ’n’ roll to private celebrations, corporate events and long-table dinners, George Lane offers a uniquely St Kilda experience within an eclectic laneway setting full of history, character and soul.

Any event. Any occasion. Day or night — we create experiences people remember.

George Lane respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which we live, work, play and hold our events. We also pay our respects to the thousands of years of song writing and storytelling of the people of the Kulin Nations and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders past and present.
