The Great Unknown are simultaneously sweet and gritty, acoustic and electric, and blues and roots. They are three songwriters, two vocalists, two guitarists, double and electric bass, drums and percussion. They are not defined by genre so much as being taken where their original songs lead them.
Following the successful ‘Cemetery Road ’ album in 2019 – described as “a real journey” by PBS radio presenter Helen Jennings – the band has continued its explorations of original, roots music. In 2020, the guys completed their 4-track ‘Troubled Waters’ EP, accompanied by three music videos – for the ‘Troubled Waters’, ‘Wedding Rings and Ladders’ and ‘Levon’ songs. And in 2022, the band finalised the ‘Sleeping Giants’ release, with tracks like the heartbreak storybook ballad ‘Three Strands Of Wire’, the social commentary of ‘Blood Moon’, the closing country-ish foot stomping ‘Twenty Eight Miles’, and, of course, the opening title-track rocker.
And now, in 2024, they’re back with their new album, ‘Dirt and Bones’. Ten tracks that again traverse a wide range of influences and styles, that lyrically address as many varied emotions too. From the opening ‘World Keeps Turning’, there’s the spooky country-tinged ‘Scarecrow Moon’, the dreamy ode to loss and re-building of ’Broken Winged Butterfly’, to the funky, social media-inspired ‘Do The Right Thing’. From the hardships of workers in lost industry in ‘These Hands’, to the realities of dealing with migraines in ‘So It Goes’, to the cooky snippets of the half-awake ramblings from a tired mind in ‘Nothing Ever Good Comes With The Mailman’, the Great Unknown touches on many of the everyday things that affect us all.
“This is quality, classy music from a band that knows its stuff. Up front vocals hit the roof and engulf the room. Old school riffs and harmonies slammed into a new day relevant to the Now!” – Glenn Williams (Main-FM)
